about art and artists. In addition to its own sites, the
Albright-Knox Art Gallery is proud to be a founding member of the

Amherst
Museum - Over 400 million
years ago, Eurypterus Remipes, an extinct relative of the modern
King crab, lived in the shallow sea that extended across New York
State, roughly along the route of the Thruway. Fossils found in
limestone quarried in Amherst are evidence of this former inland
sea. E. Remipes is now New York State's official fossil. Glaciers
were responsible for shaping the landscape of Western New York.
About 13,000 years ago, after the last ice age, there was a huge
glacial lake, called Lake Tonawanda, covered much of what would
become Amherst.

The
Arcade And Attica Railroad
is actually, at least, the third company to operate trains between
the villages of Arcade & Attica. Previous to the A&A were
the Tonawanda Valley & Cuba*, and the Buffalo, Attica, &
Arcade railroads. Today, the railroad continues to haul freight
along the 15 mile right-of-way, in addition to the 7 1/2 mile passenger
excursions. Since its incorporation in 1917, the A&A has
scrapped seven steam engines, and purchased 3 diesels & 2
steamers, as well as numerous pieces of rolling stock, both for
interchange service & online service.

A children's museum is a very special place dedicated to educating
young children through interactive exhibits. Children's museums
are similar to other museums in that we provide educational
opportunities, but rather than focus on one topic, we concentrate
on our visitors - children. Although we believe that play is an
essential part of learning, we are not solely a play space.
Throughout the museum you will find unique educational experiences
for your children - experiences not found anywhere else in Western

The
Holland Land
Office Museum is a non-profit
educational organization committed to preserving, interpreting,
and promoting an interest in Genesee County, New York. In the late
eighteenth century, the land that is now Western New York was
virgin forest and the easiest passable route to the west. In the
beginning of the nineteenth century, historic Genesee County,
frequently called "The United States' First Frontier,"
was the stopping place for thousands of pioneers moving west.
Settlers from New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and even the
Southern States, settled throughout the Holland Purchase.

On the east
side of Delaware Avenue where it leaves the north side of Niagara
Square stood the grandest of Buffalo's Gothic homes, the John
Hollister house. He erected his house, which resembled the
Gothic designs of the eminent A. J. Davis, in 1852 and resided
there until 1858. In that year the dwelling was bought by Millard
Fillmore, who came to live there several years after his
presidency. Millard
Fillmore bought the house for himself and his second
wife, Carolyn McIntosh, deciding that his home at 180 Franklin
was not grand enough for an ex-President.
